Endometriosis explained: Causes and natural relief

Endometriosis is a condition that affects 1 in 10 women. This disease is often misdiagnosed and therefore it can take many years until women who suffer from endometriosis get proper treatment.

Endometriosis occurs when endometrial tissue can be found outside the uterus which could cause symptoms like painful periods, pelvic pain, irregular menstrual cycles, painful intercourse, fatigue, digestive issues and the list goes on.

These endometrial tissues regardless of their location continue acting as if they were in the uterus and react to hormonal changes according to the menstrual cycle. Tissues very often grow on the ovaries, the Fallopian tubes, the bowels and on tissues lining the pelvis and could cause adhesions, pain in the abdomen and cramps.

In some cases endometriosis can also cause fertility problems.

The diagnosis of endometriosis is not easy and therefore it is commonly mistaken for dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation or menstrual cramps) and IBS (irritable bowel syndrome).

Since endometriosis occurs in women with estrogen dominance, the first and most important thing is to restore hormone balance within the body. Estrogen dominance occurs when estrogen levels are too high or when progesterone levels that are supposed to balance out estrogen are too low.

Medical treatment today includes pain medications and hormone therapy as a first step followed by medications that stop menstruation. In case these don’t work, doctors might recommend laporoscopic surgery to remove endometrial tissues and hysterectomy as a last resort if the condition doesn’t improve with other treatments.

That said, as an AVIVA Method trainer my mission is to support women who wish to improve their health in a natural way. My experience shows that endometriosis needs a complex, holistic approach that include hormone gymnastics, proper nutrition and certain lifestyle shifts. This condition might not have a cure but its symptoms can be managed.

I find the following steps are the most crucial ones:

  • eliminate chemicals that contain xenoestrogens

  • avoid estrogenic food products

  • avoid GMOs

  • eliminate inflammatory foods

  • treat nutrition deficiency

  • do a hormone detox

  • practice the AVIVA Method exercises
